Some people call them old school, some people call them retro and others call them classic video games. Whatever you call them, these video games are from the golden age of arcade video games. By visiting this blog, chances are that you are a fan of the late 70s, 80s and early 90s video games. The creation of this blog was meant for some time, but time just didn't allow it. With a little more time on my hands, let's take a trip down memory lane.

For younger people who don't know much about these games, these were the games that we used to spend countless hours playing at arcades, liquor stores, laundromats and anywhere else we could hang out with our friends and play the latest video games. This was a time before the popularity of the home entertainment game systems came along. We had to pay a quarter for each game we played, and it sometimes got very expensive, but we didn't mind.

Mega Man

Mega Man is a 1987 NES release that became one of Nintendo's most popular video games. The setting of the game takes place in a futuristic world. The game's main character is Mega Man who has the ability to jump and shoot. The game is a side scrolling game. When a player begins a game, they have the option of choosing what level to play. This makes the game unique from other games that require a player to play levels in a certain order. The goal of the game is to pass each level and defeat the boss of each level. When this is completed, a player will then enter Dr. Wily's castle, who has been responsible for all of the trouble in Monsteropolis. In this castle, Mega Man will encounter three more boss enemies and then finally meet the final battle with Dr. Wily. When a player beats Dr. Wily, they will have beaten the game.

During game play, the levels will have various challenges that a player will encounter before reaching the boss of the level. The top left part of the screen will have Mega Man's life meter displayed. Every time Mega man is hit, it will go down. It can be rejuvenated though if a player gets energy tanks that he will run into during game play by defeating enemies on the levels. When a player is using an optional weapon, there will be an additional bar shown. This bar will show how much of that optional weapon is left to use. A player can find weapon fills during game play to fill up the weapons bar. Next to Mega Man's life meter is the boss's life meter. This boss's life meter will not go down until a player reaches the boss of that level and battles the boss. When fighting with the boss, a player will want to get that boss's life meter down before theirs goes down.

About Mega Man

Mega Man was created to be a lab assistant by Dr. Light. Due to the evilness of Dr. Wily, Mega Man's purpose is altered and he turns into a fighter robot and has a quest to defend the world from Dr. Wily's treachery. Mega Man has a canon weapon that he is equipped with. He uses this weapon to shoot down all of the enemies that he will face on the various levels.

Power Up Items

Energy Tanks - Small tanks will give two energy points, large tanks will give ten energy points.

Weapons Tanks - Small tanks will give two weapon points, large tanks will give ten weapon points.

A 1-Up -Will give a player an additional life

Bonus Balls - Will earn a player 1000 points at the end of a completed level.

Yashichi - Found in Dr. Wily's Castle during the final level. All weapons and energy will be restored and filled.

Bosses

There are six different main bosses that a player will encounter during the game. Each boss will be met at the end of each level and can be quite challenging to pass. Each boss will have a special weapon that they are equipped with and that they will use when battling Mega Man. If a player is able to defeat a certain boss, they will then take that bosses special weapon and will be able to use it against other bosses that they will later face. Each boss is weak to at least one weapon. This does not mean that a boss cannot be defeated with just the canon weapon that Mega Man is equipped with, but some of the bosses can  be very challenging with just the cannon weapon. These are the six bosses that Mega Man will have to face.

Guts Man

Guts Man will use his strength to pick up and toss boulders and rocks at Mega Man. He will cause an earthquake to happen every time he jumps. This will cause Mega Man to be slightly off balance. When he throws boulders, a player will have to dodge it and will have to watch out for fragments too once it hits the wall. The hyper bomb is the best weapon to battle Gutsman with. It only takes three hyper bomb hits to defeat him. Fire storm can also be used on Gutsman effectively. When a player defeats Guts Man, they will be equipped with the super arm weapon.

Ice Man

This innocent looking eskimo looks harmless, but he can do some real damage to Mega Man. He is equipped with an ice slasher weapon that he will have no shame in using. He will shoot these ice arrows at Mega Man, and they are almost impossible to dodge. This will call for a player to use a weapon that can quickly defeat Ice Man. By using the thunder beam weapon, a player can easily defeat Ice Man. When a player defeats Ice Man, they will be equipped with the ice slasher weapon.

Bomb Man

Bomb Man attacks with  his hyper bomb weapon. Bomb Man will jump real high and then just stop jumping all of a sudden. He will keep Mega Man on check at all times by continually throwing bombs at him. There is a blast radius that a player has to worry about besides actually getting directly hit by the bombs. Bomb Man will try to get Mega man to continually back up until there is nowhere else to go. When a player defeats Bomb Man, they will be equipped with the hyper bombs weapon.

Fire Man

Fire Man attacks with his fire storm weapon. Everybody knows that only water can put out fire. With that in mind, the best way to attack him and defeat him is by using the ice slasher weapon. If no ice slasher weapon is available, Fire Man is also weak to the rolling cutters weapon.

Elec Man

To many players, Elec Man is considered to be the toughest boss to defeat. This may be due to his powerful thunder beam weapon that has a big affect on Mega Man. It only takes three or four hits from the thunder beam to defeat Mega Man. It could be that the electricity that comes from Elec Man's fingertips short circuits the android, and that is why Mega Man feels the affects so much. The rolling cutters are the best weapon to use against Elec Man. It will take about seven hits to defeat him while dodging his thunder beams at the same time. Even though other weapons can be used, none will have the affect on Elec Man as the rolling cutters. When a player defeats Elec Man, they will be equipped with the thunder beam weapon.

Cut Man

Cut Man will use his rolling cutters to take Mega man down. He will try to do so with the scissors on his head. He takes the scissors off of his head and then throws them at Mega Man. The scissors will then return right back to the top of Cut Man's head. The best way to defeat Cut Man is to use the Super Arm that is attained from Guts Man. By picking up a couple of blocks that are in the room and tossing them at Cut Man, a player can easily defeat Cut Man. If for some reason a player were to miss Cut Man with one of their throws, they can use the hyper bombs, fire storm or arm cannon which are also affective. When a player defeats Cut Man, they will be equipped with the rolling cutters weapon.

Once all of those six levels and six bosses are defeated, a player will move on to Dr. Wily's castle. This level will only be accessible once all levels and bosses have been defeated. Mega Man will go in Dr. Wily's castle and will have more battles with enemies and face new bosses.

Rock Man

This big brown monster will have his body parts flying from the left side of the screen to the right side. Once he is all put together, his body part will start flying from the right side of the screen to the left. He will keep doing this over and over. Mega Man will need to dodge and not let the body parts hit him as they are flying around. When Rock Man is put together at either side, a player will have to shoot him in the eye. The thunder beam is the weapon that has the best affect on Rock Man.

Mega Man Clone

The enemy will be an exact Mega Man clone. He does not have a particular weakness like other bosses or enemies. He will do everything that a player does as far as jumping, running, shooting, etc. It is best to use the thunder beam on him. Sure, he will use the same on you. A player can also use the arm cannon and just basically dual the clone to the death.

Robot Bubbles

These are seven different robot bubbles that will come out from various parts of the room. As you defeat one, the next will get faster. By using the super arm to throw blocks at them, a player can easily defeat them. The arm cannon can also be used efficiently. Since there are seven robot bubbles and only four blocks to throw at them, it is best to use the arm cannon to defeat the first three that are slower and then use the super arm for the final four.

The regular bosses - Second battle

Mega Man will then have to fight all of the regular level bosses again. Guts Man, Ice Man, Bomb Man, Fire man, Elec Man and Cut Man will all need to be defeated continually.

Dr. Wily

Dr. Wily will be in the safety of a UFO for the final battle of the game. Mega man will finally meet the main villain of the game who has cause all of the mayhem. The UFO will fire shots at a player to defeat Mega Man. A player will want to continually shot at the UFO with the thunder beam as it can be shot in any direction. A player will also want to make sure that they aim at the red dot on the UFO from where its shots come from. During this time, a player will not be able to see Dr. Wily in the UFO. When the red dot has been done with, the armor will come off of the UFO and Dr. Wily will be able to be seen sitting in the UFO. At this time, a player will want to equip the rolling cutters weapon and shoot it at the cockpit area. Enough hits, and Dr. Wily is defeated and a player has beaten the Mega Man game.

The number in the top middle of the screen is a player's points. The score will increase during game play as enemies are defeated and bonuses are collected. There are many enemies that Mega Man will face during the game.

Mega Man Strategies

The main strategy to Mega Man is defeating the bosses in a certain order. This is because a player will want a certain weapon that they have gained from one boss so that they can use it to defeat another boss. This is the recommended level order a player should follow.

1. Bomb Man
2. Gutsman
3. Cutman
4. Elecman
5. Iceman
6. Fireman

My personal experience playing Mega Man

By the time the NES came out, I was kind of getting out video games as I got busy with other things in life. I mainly played games on my nephew's NES when I would visit my sister. Meg Man was a game that I really liked. I liked it so much that I played it enough to practice enough to pass Dr. Willy. How would I do now? I don't know. It will probably take some practice again.

Play Mega Man online right now

Mega Man can be played online right now. This version looks identical to the real Mega Man and I didn't notice much difference. The game is titled Rockman, which was the name of the game in Japan. Of course, as I always say, using the arrows will take some getting used of when playing on your computer. Mega Man fans will certainly enjoy playing.
