Some people call them old school, some people call them retro and others call them classic video games. Whatever you call them, these video games are from the golden age of arcade video games. By visiting this blog, chances are that you are a fan of the late 70s, 80s and early 90s video games. The creation of this blog was meant for some time, but time just didn't allow it. With a little more time on my hands, let's take a trip down memory lane.

For younger people who don't know much about these games, these were the games that we used to spend countless hours playing at arcades, liquor stores, laundromats and anywhere else we could hang out with our friends and play the latest video games. This was a time before the popularity of the home entertainment game systems came along. We had to pay a quarter for each game we played, and it sometimes got very expensive, but we didn't mind.

BurgerTime

BurgerTime is a unique retro video game that was released in 1982. The concept of the video game was pretty simple. The player had to make hamburgers by dropping each piece of the hamburgers to the bottom of the screen to complete the full hamburgers. Each level has multiple hamburgers on it that the player must complete in order to move on to the next level.

A player will take on the role of chef Peter Pepper. Peter Pepper will have to walk around a maze platform and walk over certain ingredients of the hamburger to make them drop down a level of the platform. These ingredients are buns, the hamburger patty, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. When a player makes a certain ingredient drop, every other piece underneath it will also drop. The ones that are farthest down will drop off of the maze and into the plate if they are one level up on the maze platform. When all pieces are dropped to the bottom of the screen into the plates, the hamburger will be complete.

To complete a level of BurgerTime, a player must complete all of the hamburgers that are on that stage. As a player progresses through the levels, the mazes will change and become more challenging. Also, the enemies will get faster and will be more difficult to get away from. We will talk more about the enemies below.

There are six levels to BurgerTime, and each level will bring on tougher challenges. In farther levels, more ingredients will be added to the hamburger to make it tougher on the player. Also, there will be many more enemies roaming around the maze. The advanced level mazes will make it hard on a player because there will be many corners that are easy for the player to get trapped in. Upon completing level six, the player will be taken back to a more difficult level one.

BurgerTime Enemies

BurgerTime would be a very simple game if it did not have Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Egg and Mr. Pickle in it. Their goal is to get Peter Pepper before he can complete the hamburgers. If they get Peter Pepper, a player will lose on of their lives. While playing this video game, a player will need to avoid these guys in order to pass the levels. The enemies will always be on a constant hunt to get Peter Pepper.

Strategies

The best thing that a player can do while playing BurgerTime is to try and drop the highest ingredient first. This will be the top bun of each hamburger. The reason for this is that when the highest ingredient is dropped and there are others directly below it, all others under it will drop as well.

Peter Pepper is equipped with a pepper weapon that he can throw at enemies to stall them for a few seconds. This will allow the player to get by the enemy. A player should be wise with his weapon. A player is only given a certain amount on each level, and it should only be used when needed. When a player finds himself in a situation that he cannot get out of, the pepper spray should be used. To get more pepper spray, a player should collect the bonus foods that will appear in the center of the screen. A food will appear when a player has dropped a certain amount of ingredients. These foods include ice cream, french fries and coffee.

Killing the enemies at every opportunity available is also important to do. When Petter Pepper walks over an ingredient and it drops, any enemies that are in its way will get crushed and die. Enemies will also die if they are on top of the ingredient and all support is lost and it falls. When this happens, the ingredient will often times fall more than one level down. The more enemies that are on top of it, the farther it will fall. If you are aiming for a high score, points are earned be killing the enemies. If you kill multiple enemies with one ingredient falling, you will earn more points. Many people competed at this game with scoring as the determination of the winner instead of the level someone got to.

My personal experience playing BurgerTime

Back in the days when BurgerTime was not a retro game, many moons ago, I would frequently play BurgerTime. I had my own patterns down that I used to pass all levels and have the game repeat from level one multiple times. I don't recall what my score was. It was always a fun game that didn't costs many quarters as a game could last for quite some time. It is a video game that is always fun and entertaining for a kid and the hamburger concept of the game is always great.
